The Huge Opportunity of Climate-Impact Investing

Published about 2 months ago • 2 min read

All over the world governments are rolling-out new climate-risk reporting rules, and that means all investors are now sustainable investors.

This represents huge progress in the way capital markets view environmental risks, and while we still have a long way to go in decarbonising our economy… we’ve reached a critical mass of positive change.

At this juncture, a set of exciting opportunities have emerged for investors to fund and support the new breed of climate-focussed companies. A new language is emerging, and most importantly, a new model of financial analysis.

This is Climate-Impact Investing, it’s leading the industrial and financial overhaul of our economy, and it’s set to be the most powerful investment theme this century.

This has been a key focus of my work and my writing over the past decade, but at this pivotal moment in time, where policy, technology and capital have converged, I’m doubling down on the opportunity, and I’m relaunching my consulting business under a new banner, it’s called Wearth.

Wearth is a boutique consulting firm, working with fund managers and founders to design impact measurement systems that unlock value.

Plus… I’m excited to announce that I will be partnering with Tideline, the preeminent global impact advisory firm.

Tideline will contribute its expertise to enhance Wearth’s consulting services for select clients in Australia and APAC. We’re excited to leverage Tideline’s institutional offering in the region, to support more managers with cutting-edge impact strategies, and continue the evolution of impact finance. All aimed at accelerating positive change.

Stay tuned for more updates about our current projects, and hit reply if you'd like to know about our service offering.

A new website is on the way, and you can sign-up here to follow progress.

I’ll continue to use this newsletter, and the Good Future podcast, to share insights and stories about the impact innovators who are reshaping our economy. And keep you up to date on the projects I’m working on, as well as all the investment opportunities that are set to shape the future.

It’s going to be a big year, stay tuned.

Mainstreaming Impact, With Purpose @ Impact Investment Summit 2024

I’ve been attending the Impact Summit since 2017, and this year the programming and the breadth of themes on offer are testament to how far the sector has come.

It’s being held on 20-21 March (that’s next week) at the ICC in Sydney, get tickets here

Adam Goodes will open proceedings. The ex-AFL-Champion-turned-impact-investor, in conversation with MC Lillian Kline, will share the mission behind the Black Excellence Fund, which is all about accelerating Indigenous entrepreneurship and amplifying Black Excellence.

The session promises to help you gain unique perspectives on harnessing financial influence for social good and fostering a legacy of excellence beyond the playing field.

And that’s just the start…

  • Treasurer Jim Chalmers will offer his take on the impact investment sector
  • ImpactConnect will see innovative startups pitch their vision for positive change
  • Liesl Yearsley will give a keynote on the impact of Ai
  • Dr Cle-Anne Gabriel, from KPMG, will explore sustainable development
  • Sam Elsom, founder of Sea Forest, will tackle about the transformational power of seaweed

I hope to see you there. More details here.

All the best,

John Treadgold

It’s been a hot summer, and as we watch global weather conditions become increasingly volatile, it can be hard to stay optimistic about the work we’re doing. It can feel like a seesaw. It's a feeling that sways between optimism about all the progress we’re making in decarbonisation and climate impact investing, and then pivoting back to pessimism, as another glacier sinks into the sea, and another dozen species are lost to rising temperatures and pulped rainforests. It’s a malaise that many...

Australia is very good at clearing land, but that’s bad news for biodiversity, and it’s making climate change worse. To go deeper in our exploration of Investing in Natural-Capital we’re shining the spotlight on deforestation, to help investors understand the risks and opportunities, but also, to highlight the work WWF Australia is doing to save Koala habitats by shifting incentives away from land-clearing. Australia Leads the Way on Deforestation, And That’s a Big Risk for Investors...
